Julian Rachlin

JULIAN RACHLIN

Violinist, violist, teacher.

Born in Lithuania (1974); then immigrated to Austria (1978) with his parents, also musicians. Studied at Vienna Conservatory (with B. Kuschnir) and teaches there (since 1999). Took private lessons with P. Zuckermann.

Winner of the “Young Musician of the Year” award at the Eurovision Competition (the Concertgebouw Hall, 1988). Invited by L. Maazel to play at the Berlin Festival with the Orchestre National de France and to tour through Europe and Japan with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. The youngest soloist ever performing with the Vienna Philharmonic (debuted under Riccardo Muti conducting).

Recites with the world leading orchestras: such as the Los Angeles, Munich, New York and St. Petersburg Philharmonic, as well as the London, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Staatskapelle Dresden, Gewandhaus Leipzig Symphony Orchestras, etc. — working with such famous conductors as V. Ashkenazy, H. Blomstedt, B. Haitink, M. Jansons, J. Levine, Z. Mehta, Y. Menuhin, Sir R. Norrington, K. Penderecki, A. Previn, M. Rostropovich, E.-P. Salonen, W. Sawallisch and others.

Frequent participant of many European festivals, including Schleswig Holstein (Germany), Lucerne and Verbier (Switzerland), as well as the “Mozart Week” in Salzburg (Austria). Received Accademia Musicale Chigiana’s International Prize in Siena (Italy), one of the most prestigious awards for classical musicians.

Plays the “ex Carrodus” violin (Guarneri del Gesú, 1741), provided by the Austrian National Bank. Plays viola as well (since 2000).
