MAXIM FEDOTOV

People's Artist of Russia. Violinist and conductor.

Born into the family of Vladimir Fedotov, outstanding conductor with the Mariinsky Theater, People's Artist of Russia. His musical education M. Fedotov received first at the Special Music School in Saint-Petersburg and then – at the Moscow P. I. Tchaikovsky State Conservatory, where he attended the class of Full Professor D. M. Tsyganov. During his postgraduate years, M. Fedotov received master classes held by I. S. Bezrodny.

Prizewinner of international Competitions:

  • 1981: All-Union Violin Competition (Riga)
  • 1982: N. Paganini Competition (Genoa);
  • 1984: G. Viotti Chamber Ensemble Competition (Vercelli);
  • 1986: First Prize, the Gold Medal, and all special prizes in the Violin Competition (Tokyo);
  • 1986: Second Prize in the P. I. Tchaikovsky Competition (Moscow).

Maxim Fedotov is recognizable by the aspiration for permanent expansion of his chamber music repertoire with duet transcriptions of the masterpieces of the classical music, which are being performed and recorded by the artist for the first time. The violinist performs with orchestras conducted by Y. Svetlanov, V. Fedoseyev, V. Sinaisky, A. Lazarev, and Pletnyov, as well as most prestigious orchestras across the world: Berlin Symphony Orchestra, philharmonics in Dresden, Tokyo, Zagreb, Leipzig, and Weimar. M. Fedotov participates in many musical festivals both in the Russian Federation and abroad. At all recitals and chamber music concerts, the violinist always performs with pianist G. Petrova who has been his regular accompanist since 1992.

Maxim Fedotov maintains an active concert schedule, touring both Russia and other countries like the USA, Japan, Korea, Australia, Mexico, West European countries, Scandinavia, and Asia. He performs regularly in the Large Hall of the Saint-Petersburg Philharmonic. Over the last decade alone, he gave more than 50 performances (recitals plus concerts with symphony orchestras) in the Moscow Conservatory. Maxim Fedotov’s repertoire covers all major violin works, including 30 violin concertos and solo cycles (24 caprices by Paganini performed by M. Fedotov were released through DML Classics).

Since 2003, Maxim Fedotov has been Artistic Director and Chief Conductor of the Russian Symphony Orchestra. President of the Association of Laureates of the P. I. Tchaikovsky International Competition (from 2002). In 2000, he was elected member of the “Petrovskaya” Academy of Science and Art (Saint-Petersburg). Serves as juror in international violin competitions. He has held master classes in Germany, Spain, Japan, Croatia, and Australia.

Maxim Fedotov participates in major cultural and political events, e.g., “Russian Culture Days” held in different countries, recitals in cycles called “Eminent Russian Performers in Residences of Leaders of Diplomatic Missions of G8 Countries” (Moscow, 1998). “Eminent Russian Performers for the Third Millennium” (Berlin, 1999), participated in the “Millennium Concert” in the Great Hall of the UN General assembly (NYC, 2000). Soloist of the Moscow State Philharmonic (from 1987), full professor at the Moscow P.I. Tchaikovsky State Conservatory (from 1987 through 2001), full professor and Head of the Violin and Viola Department at the Russian Gnesin Academy of Music (from 2003).
