Svyatoslav Belza

SVYATOSLAV BELZA

Svyatoslav Belza was born on April 26, 1942, in Chelyabinsk.

1965: graduated from the Moscow M. V. Lomonosov State University, Philological Department (majors: philology; theory and history of literature). 1965: junior research associate at the Gorky World Literature Institute under the Russian Academy of Sciences. 1986: senior researcher at the Gorky World Literature Institute under the Russian Academy of Sciences. 1979 –1989: reviewer for the foreign culture column of the Literaturnaya Gazeta. 1988 –1996: author and host of the Music On Air TV program, the ORT channel. 1993 –1995: artistic director of the music and entertainment programs studio, Ostankino. 1993 and 1998: jury president of the Cineshock festival. Present: hosts the Masterpieces of World Music Theater series on the Culture TV channel.

Fellow of the Russian Arts Academy (1997), member of the Russian Television Academy (1994), member of the Union of Writers (1975), member of the Union of Russian Journalists (1971), member of the Union of Russian Theater Workers (1999). Captain of the English Club, member of the Monolith Club, and member the Writers’ Club under the Central House of Literary Workers.

1994: awarded the Honored Art Worker of the Russian Federation honorary title. 1988: Honored Culture Worker of Poland. 1997: awarded the Officer Merit Cross of the Polish Republic. The Order of St. Nicolas the Miracle Worker (Ukraine). 1999: Public Recognition honorary badge.

In his school and university years, went in for fencing (champion of the Moscow State University; junior champion of Moscow). Is a keen bibliophile, like his father. Music and related education activity became his second profession. Author of over 300 publications; some of them were translated into English, Italian, Polish, Czech, Slovak, Hungarian, and other languages. Lives and works in Moscow.
